About who needs care: My sister has Parkinson's Disease, and requires assistance for bathing and dressing, as well as transportation to therapy and classes. She cannot cook, but she does feed herself, and functions at a high cognitive level. She has classes most mornings at a center not far from her home. Her husband is also in his 80s, and at the moment is hospitalized, although that should be a brief stay. He has been providing her care for several years, but may not be able to handle it all himself now.
About the care needs: Patience and a gentle sense of humor would be ideal in a care giver. My sister would probably prefer a female caregiver, although she has had some male helpers. The person should have knowledge and/or experience with Parkinson's patients, and their characteristic problems with movement. It is not necessary that the caregiver have specific hobbies or interests, but probably important that s/he is interested in context, community, and the world around us.
Services needed include: transportation, meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, feeding, and bathing / dressing.
