I cared for my grandfather for 7 years. My duties included medication management, transport to/from appointments, organization, paperwork, coordinating care, shopping, housekeeping, laundry, cooking, accounting, etc. He was mostly mobile but became wheelchair bound in his last two years. I was able to learn how to transfer him from his bed to his wheelchair and vice versa. I worked for my grandpa daily as he had many medical ailments. Although he was mostly dependent, he did have many independent qualities. I was sensitive to his drive to keep as much independence as possible. We worked and learned from each other on a daily basis. We were able to coordinate and negotiate his independent activities. My primary concern was his safety and I put that above everything. The best part of it all was being his friend. I believe companionship in caregiving builds trust. It isn't just a job but a relationship. Both parties benefit from feeling comfortable and recognized.
