The Orton-Gillingham approach offers direct and explicit phonics instruction which ensures the student understands a concept before building upon that knowledge. The lessons are tactile and kinesthetic, which creates deeper neurological connections that can be utilized during the encoding and decoding process. By beginning with the initial building blocks of phonics, the students develop a deep understanding and confidence in their work; I have seen the validity of this approach in the students I work with. After receiving my Associates in Orton-Gillingham, I taught at a middle school in Manhattan as learning specialist, working one-on-one with students multiple times a week. The school was created for students who had various diagnoses that made learning more challenging. A lot of my students were dyslexic, ADHD, or ASD. I am very comfortable working with students who might experience emotional dysregulation during challenging tasks.
