My daughter will start preschool in August, and it's bittersweet to bid farewell to our beloved nanny, Zhou Ayi, who has cared for her since she was four months old, forming a special bond over the past 1.5 years. Zhou Ayi is a warm, loving, and engaged nanny. Their days together are filled with laughter, playtime, reading, and developmental activities. She effortlessly balances patience with firm yet gentle boundaries. Zhou Ayi's unwavering focus is solely on our daughter; she never distracts herself with her phone. She enriches our daughter's experiences with outings to playgrounds, the Cal Academy of Sciences, library story time, and music classes. We trust her and our daughter's safety on public transportation. She is very social with other nannies, and our little one has playdates daily with nearby kids, which helps her develop important social skills and gives me a sense of safety too, as I know that lots of people in the neighborhood are familiar with her. I joke that having a great nanny is like having a family member take care of your kid… except one who has boundaries! She shares feedback and advice based on her vast experience taking care of kids, especially when I ask for it. And she’s very respectful of our desired parenting practices related to food, safety, sleep, sickness, and so forth. In her care, our daughter has grown into a very social, confident, talkative, expressive, bilingual, and sweet toddler. Honestly it has been such a healing experience to work with her, for me, as a first time mom, and we really do consider her part of our parenting support system. Zhou Ayi is also very respectful of alternative lifestyle choices. We live in an intergenerational community house, and she has a great relationship with all our housemates and is conscientious about taking up space and cleaning up with other housemates working from home. Our housemates love her too!
