I was a volunteer tutor for most of my high school (until the pandemic). I was working with elementary and middle school-age students who spoke very little English. Many of these students even spoke different languages from each other as this tutoring center was for refugee families to get some support in their English learning, but more specifically for students who were put into entirely English-speaking schools. We worked on both basic math skills and the math that they were learning in the classroom, however, my main focus was reading comprehension. In this position, I had to come up with unique ways to communicate and build individual and on-the-spot tutoring plans/goals each day I was there.
