For over the past 2 decades, I have worked with children ranging in ages from infancy to high school seniors, in a variety of capacities/settings. I pride myself in being able to tailor my work with families to find the balance between teaching kids appropriate behavior, while respecting their need to explore, grow and express their individuality. I started babysitting as a teenager with the Red Cross, and continued through college. I was a full-time nanny in DC for a 2-year-old and his infant brother. 10 years later, I am very close with the family and provide care for the boys. With them, I do school pick-up, homework help, meal/bedtime prep, transportation to/from activities, taking field trips, and overnight care for entire weekends. I have assisted a daycare provider with infants and have worked with other families to provide care for their infants and elementary age children. As an educator in DC, I was a full-time Americorps volunteer, a Middle/High School Special Education teacher, a General Education Math teacher, and an administrator. Melanie has babysat for our children for 10 years. We first met her when my husband supervised her as an Americorps volunteer. She was responsible and mature in that role and he thought she would be able to care for our one-year old when she completed her time with Americorps. She was an incredible caregiver. At first she worked for us full time for a few months. Our then one-year old immediately adored her. After that initial period, she has sat for us periodically - for a few hours to a few days at a time. I trust her completely. She is thoughtful, mature, calm, imaginative, creative, patient, and responsible. Our children completely adore her - and they have at every age. She was wonderful with newborns, toddlers, and now just as good at handling what appears to be the beginning of the tweens! Melanie is a wonderful person. I cannot praise her enough. She is a gem.
