Mason was with me for the better part of nine months as a caregiver for a senior sufferer of Parkinson's Disease — and it's really too bad that she had to leave. Most caregivers have little training for Parkinson's, but Mason was not only a fast learner, after a couple of weeks she began to anticipate my needs and took her own initiative with things before I would have to ask for them. What I mean to say is that from nearly the first week, we hit it off really well together and became life-long friends — almost like a second daughter to me. Mason helped me with my daily activities, and with Parkinson's that is not an easy task. She scoped out videos for me to watch, read poetry to me, introduced me to audio books to which we shared an enriching listening experience, and played board games with me. Every day, she would help me do my Qigong exercises, which she picked up quite easily and which would help me pass the rest of the day with a little more ease than normal. In my case with Parkinson's, I have a lot of tension in my neck, shoulders and upper arms, which requires almost constant agitation and movement of the arms during the times I have my tremors, some four to five hours of the work day or 8-hr shift. The physical constancy of it is demanding to say the least, but Mason discharged this responsibility with the care, compassion, humor, and empathy that one would expect from a family member. I now consider her to be a family member, and still call on her in emergencies when I expect to find myself without a caregiver. With Parkinson's time does not fly by; however, every day that Mason was with me, the day did seem shorter because of the companionship and loving care she provided. Anyone would do themselves a favor by bringing her on board. We certainly did.
