Maria came into our lives when our daughter was 3 months old and I had to return to work. I interviewed multiple nannies, but when Maria came into our home and scooped up my baby with ease and love, I knew she was the one. She made an otherwise difficult time, possible and even comfortable. With all our family long distance, Maria quickly became our California family. She was with us five days a week for 5 years until our second daughter started full time pre-school. Our girls are now 7 and 9, and we still love getting together with Maria and her family. The girls make sure she is always our first call when we need a sitter. They appreciate her warmth, silliness, generosity, creativity, and cooking of course. They always want to see her (and her husband Ricardo). We are grateful for how well Maria knows our daughters (their strengths, sense of humors, triggers, etc.) and how much she loves them for it all. Some of my favorite videos of their early days are from Maria. It is such a gift to watch how happy they always were in her company, and how much Maria enjoyed playing with them. I am also grateful for the Spanish she introduced to them (they understood it as well as English early on, and even spoke a little) and the exposure to such a beautiful family-first Mexican culture. We always feel included and comfortable with Maria’s family. Our friends adopted her as part of our neighborhood as well (and couldn’t believe how lucky we were to have found her). The trust we have for Maria, that she would always love and take amazing care of our kids, is more than we could ever have hoped for. We’d refer her a million times over for that alone. But Maria also made our busy lives manageable by all the practical help – the laundry, cleaning, dishes and cooking (for the girls). She made it possible for us to come home after work and just enjoy time with our kids. She is the hardest working woman I know. I don’t think she knows how to sit down. I look back at the years are kids were babies and toddlers with such nostalgia. They were not easy years, but they were a lot of fun. I am so grateful Maria was “in it” with us. I am excited for the lucky family who gets to have her “in it” with them next. She is just the best.
