I believe that children should have fun and that children should constantly be learning. I believe that every moment is a teachable moment, learning through play, not just academics, but sportsmanship, manners, etc. are developed through play. This is often substituted with video games and being stuck indoors. With that being said, I am very much into board games, sports, and outdoor activities. While I do understand the need to play video games and watch movies (both of which have their upsides, as well), but that should not be the babysitter. Children need to live a balanced life. Aside from being a teacher, I am a mom of a 21-year-old son and a 13-year-old daughter. I am an aunt of 12, each about 2 years apart starting at the age of 18 working down to 2 years old, (also 29 and 27-year-old nephews-I'm even a great aunt!. I am constantly surrounded by my friends' kids and neighborhood kids. I have been babysitting since I was 12 years old. I began volunteering in a daycare where I worked until I was 20 years old. I worked for 3 families during my teenage years to early twenties. One family, I worked with until the girls were 13 and 11 (beginning at infancy). I am a certified teacher, and have experience working at Girl Scout camp, where I am also an active volunteer. I am First Aid/CPR/AED certified by the American Red Cross. I don't mind helping out around the house, as if it were my own, but there is a reason why I have my own housekeeper! Trust me; you do not want me to iron your clothes!
