Experience: 5 yrs
I have been taking care of pets (my own included) my whole life. I volunteered with the wake county animal center in NC for 4 years as well as fostered 21 different dogs over those years! I love animals, all of them, like they are my own. I'd love to help you care for your animals if you need help!
Heather, at first, was very communicative. Her interview skills were impressive. She was warm & kind hearted - especially towards our fur babies. Being completely transparent, we discussed with Heather our challenge: our dogs can get aggressive with each other around strangers. She assured us that she was comfortable in 'uncomfortable' dog situations, sharing that her household had some similar issues. Hearing her stories of past experiences, we agreed to hire Heather and her first few "shifts" were to care for the animals while we were present - so the dogs would know that she was a safe person to trust in our home. We had 3 (paid) visits like that and when all seemed to be going well, we scheduled her first 'SOLO' visit. The dogs, as expected, started showing signs of aggression towards each other. Heather instinctively called me at work to share that things didn't go well. She was able to separate them (putting 2 outside and kept the older one inside), but she DEFINITELY couldn't feed or medicate them in this state. I said I understood, told her that I would be home in 90 minutes, and as long as they were in a safe, secure location, she could leave the dogs separated. She took her pay and left. Later that night, she checked in (via text) to see how the dogs were doing (again - a very sweet, conscientious act). I told her all was well, and we had regained our calm state. She suggested that we try again soon, and asked if it would be ok for her to leave an article of her clothing (with her scent on it) during her next visit - allowing the dogs to have a reminder of her around more routinely. I thought that was a TERRIFIC idea, and said "yes"! We planned that she would come by for her next 'attended shift' in 3 days. One day before her scheduled visit, Heather text that she had a family crisis and wasn't sure she could work the next day. I said I understood, and wished her good luck for the stress she was experiencing. Later that evening, I text and asked if she was ok? She explained that a family member had taken ill, was in the hospital, and it was very overwhelming. I offered her the option to text me if she needed anything, or we could be of any assistance in her difficult time. Two days later I text to ask if she was ok? Silence. Three days later, I wished her a Happy Thanksgiving. Silence. A week later, I text to ask if she would be interested in rescheduling her work visit with our dogs? Silence. After 4 weeks, I sent one last text message asking if she was ok? I would have liked SOME explanation as to why she completely ignored my messages and left us without a dog sitter. However, it has now been 4 months and I still only have silence. 'Ghosting' an employer is NOT ok, especially when that employer has only shown you kindness. If you no longer want the position you were given, a REPUTABLE employee will give notice or offer some reasoning as to why they can't continue the job, and allow the employer peace-of-mind knowing that it's ok to hire someone else. This survey's last questions asks, "Would you rehire Heather?" My answer: NO
