When my 96 yo grandmother was widowed I offered to live with her because we had so few opportunities to see one another during our lifetimes due to divorce and distance. Surprised to discover she had Alzheimer's but I was glad I was the one to care for her following my grandfather's passing. Together 72 years and suddenly she was alone. It was rewarding and enlightening for me to provide care to her when she needed it the most. She gained 9 lbs and we traveled the US. Since 2017, I've worked in ALFs in S. Florida. My experience in the USMC and the FDNY have helped me understand there's no greater use of a life than service.
