I have cared for my landlord's 15-year-old dog (a rescue mutt around 40 lbs) for two weeks at a time, keeping her in my place, feeding and walking her. I have a large outdoor space at my house and plenty of room inside. I have also cared for a friend's miniature pincer, feeding, walking, and administering medication.
