I am a 27 years old, I have been babysitting for 15 years. I started by babysitting my younger family members, then it progressed to me babysitting the neighborhood children, in 2014 I was given my first infant at 3 weeks old whom I cared for until she was 8 months. In 2015 I became the nanny to a 1-year-old baby boy whom is now 12 and my godchild. I still care for both him along with is soon to be 9-year-old sister, his 2-year-old sister and planning to care for his new sibling coming whom. I have also worked as a teachers assistant in an after school program with 3/4th graders. I am a former home health aide; I work now in fast food but willing to commit to a reasonable work, and I currently am an on call nanny for a pair of siblings 6 and 4 years old.
Alexis cared for my two daughters, who were 2½ and 1½ years old, full-time, Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., in our home in Bronxville. There were many evenings when Alexis stayed later to help, but that is not the reason I would recommend her so highly. Alexis was incredibly interactive, engaging, and hands-on with my girls. She made a genuine effort to teach them throughout the day, helped expand their vocabulary, and kept them actively engaged rather than simply supervising them. She became such an important and positive part of their daily lives. I told Alexis countless times, “Please don’t worry about straightening up,” but she always went above and beyond. Especially while I was pregnant, she was incredibly thoughtful and would make sure the girls’ messes were cleaned up—whether it was their food, dishes, toys, or anything else they had gotten into throughout the day. She was never asked to do these things; she simply cared enough to help. I was genuinely heartbroken to have to let Alexis go, and I am still sad that she is no longer a part of my girls’ lives. Even now, they continue to mimic her mannerisms and repeat things she taught them—things I certainly cannot take credit for! That, to me, speaks volumes about the impact she had on them. Unfortunately, I was let go from my job and am also preparing to go on maternity leave, so it would not be fair to keep Alexis from finding another family who can offer her consistent work. Letting her go was entirely a financial and personal circumstance, and had absolutely nothing to do with the quality of care she provided. I cannot recommend Alexis highly enough. She is caring, dependable, patient, engaging, and truly invested in the children she cares for. I sincerely hope that I have the opportunity to rehire her someday, but more than anything, I hope she finds a wonderful family whose lives she can impact just as positively as she impacted my girls’ lives. Any family would be incredibly lucky to have her.
