About who needs care: It is actually both parents. Both in their 80's. Neither should drive. They need reminders to take their medication. Assistance with meal prep. Transportation to and from occupational therapy and medical appointments hair appointments etc. Dad had surgery on his left shoulder in November and needs to be encouraged to do his exercises and be more independent in his use of his left hand. He has intermittent confusion. Past history of open heart surgery. Mom has memory problems and has had a recent diagnosis of early alzheimers. Both take meds for high blood pressure. Both parents watch a lot of TV. Mom still does laundry and can wash dishes. Mom used to do machine embroidery but her macular degeneration and memory challenges make that hard. Dad used to play golf so he tends to watch golf on tv. Sadly my Mom smokes. She smokes in the garage and safety is a big concern to reduce risk of fires. About the care needs: It would be nice to have someone that has a bubbly personality with a combination of concern for my parents (not pitty) and supportive encouraging nature. It is important that we support as much of their independent behaviors as we can. I do not want them to feel useless; but we can't let them engage in dangerous behavior. It would be great if the caregiver had a background as a medication technician. It would be nice to have someone whose personality wouldn't allow them to be manipulated or tricked (by my Mom & Dad) into allowing my parents to drive or do other dangerous activities. Services needed include: transportation, meal preparation, errands / shopping, and light housekeeping. Preference for a caregiver who is female.
