Hands-on Care Needed For My Grandfather In Tehachapi

Full Time
About who needs care: My grandfather, Lee, is on hospice care due to congestive heart failure. He is very much motivated to stay active - this is not the comfort care provided for nonresponsive people on their death bed, but rather someone who wants to stay in his home and engaged with friends and family. Right now, he is strong enough to move about on his own but does use a walker or cane when leaving the house. He needs help with cleaning, transportation to town for grocery shopping or friends' visits, and food preparation. The family cares for these needs on Sunday - Wednesday, and hospice care nurses come to visit Monday - Thursday for an hour daily. We are looking for someone to come for a few hours a day on Thursday, possibly Friday, and Saturday to help with daily tasks. His condition may deteriorate unexpectedly and he may need help standing or need someone nearby in case he falls while walking. He needs someone to stand outside the bathroom door while he showers (in case of falls) but does not need help bathing at this time. His mind is clear most of the time but he occasionally gets confused. He loves drag racing, watching the news, talking about politics (he leans liberal), and telling stories. He's an optimistic person who laughs hard and laughs often. He was an electrical engineer by trade and a handyman by necessity - he can fix anything, and teach you how to do it too. He has two dogs that need care but at the moment he can help them with most things. He is deeply loved by his family and we know the people that care for him will be grateful to know him too. About the care needs: We need someone who is positive and who wants to support him in staying active. That person also needs to know that they should check for pain levels and make sure he is as healthy as he can be, but most importantly to encourage him in doing the things he wants to do. Ideally this person would have a minimal level of medical skills, as in, knowing how to record the vital signs that he knows how to take, and monitoring medications. They should be a happy person who wants to engage in conversation and enjoy reminiscing on a life well lived. Someone who knows about cars and mechanics would be a plus. Services needed include: transportation, meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, companionship, feeding, bathing / dressing, and mobility assistance.
