About Courtney

I have 5 years of experience tutoring and substitute teaching for a variety of ages and areas of study. I worked for 4 years as a Writing Center tutor helping students improve their writing and research skills at all levels. In this position I gained experience working with multilingual students and non-native English speakers as well as students with various learning disabilities or challenges, including dyslexia and ADD/ADHD. As a writing tutor I helped students with all types of writing in all topics, including research papers, essays, creative writing, speech writing, etc. Going beyond simply proofreading, I worked with students to improve writing skills at all levels, from brainstorming, organization and thesis writing to paragraph structure and syntax. In my experience helping students with speech writing I have also coached some students in public speaking (drawing from my own experience in debate, forensics and acting). I also work as a general tutor or "homework helper", helping students improve their study skills, organization, focus and concentration, and reading comprehension. I am also available as an art tutor in a wide variety of mediums. I have extensive experience in the more 'traditional' mediums of painting, drawing, and ceramics as well as some of the less traditional art forms such as stone sculpture, batik, jewelry making, and fiber art. I majored in studio art in college and studied painting, drawing, and sculpture in Florence, Italy for a semester. I have 3+ years of experience as an Arts and Crafts instructor at a summer camp and teaching art as a substitute teacher. In my experience teaching art I have worked with students of all levels to improve their artistic skills and technique while also nurturing their creativity and expression. In all my tutoring I strive to create a positive and productive environment for the student. I always practice patience and make sure to provide encouragement and praise, which I believe is essential to help a student reach their full potential.
