About who needs care: My grandmother is in the advanced stages of Dementia. She is still verbal but is starting to loose her ability to talk. She is able to get around but has a hard time so she needs help getting around. She is unable to use the bathroom her self and needs help with bathroom visits. She also needs someone who can engage her in conversations during their time with her. Because she is loosing her language its kind of hard to get her to talk about interests. She does love to talk about decorations flowers her pets and food. A normal day with her would include getting her up and getting her to the bathroom and cleaned up and changed. Bringing her down into the living room and getting her something to eat. Then spending some time with her and engaging her in some conversation and maybe even some arts and crafts. After a few hours you might need to give her a second meal. About the care needs: We are looking for a friendly and professional caregiver who has a great sense of compassion and engaging with my grandmother. The focus should always be on her first and getting to know the other members of the family should be second. As far as specific skills it would be helpful if they really knew how to engage people with advanced dementia. They will need to know how to redirect and how to be as patient as possible and how not take anything personal. Someone who is really able to listen and ask questions to get her talking. When it comes to hobbies my grandmother likes to paint both pictures and ceramics. So you don't have to be a professional artist but just an interest and willingness to do it with her would be great. Services needed include: meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, feeding, bathing / dressing, and mobility assistance.
